I love lacrosse; plain and simple. Now if you were there on the first day of class you know this because it was all I was capable of talking about. I know it’s not the most popular sport and if you live west of Kentucky you’ve probably never even heard of it, but where I come from lacrosse is a religion. I wish I could say that that was me being dramatic, but it’s the downright truth. Maryland is known for 3 things: the best damn crabs in the country, starting the band Good Charlotte (just kidding, probably no one knows that – even Marylanders), and the game of lacrosse. Friday night lights are reserved for lacrosse games, not football games. I can drive down the street in the spring and lose count of how many little boys are in their front yards throwing around a lacrosse ball. It’s just how we were raised.
The reason I love lacrosse it because of the passion the people who play it have for the game. Now I know that that is generalizing and not everyone fits that mold, so that’s usually why I say it in the context of the MLL – Major League Lacrosse – the professional outdoor lacrosse league. After working for the MLL this past summer I realized that the men who give it their all on the field every Saturday night of the summer are average-Joes. They work in offices, banks, hospitals; you name it. I was shocked when I saw the measly check they were written for their efforts. They play because they love the game and they have a passion for the sport of lacrosse. Well, at least I hope that’s the case, because there are not enough zeros on the end of that check to warrant that being their only source of income!
